At work we’re preparing a special event for Universal Children’s Day on November 20, Noah’s 8th birthday… While I was writing the orientation for our teachers about what Universal Children’s Day is, what the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) contains, I couldn’t help but continously think about the children of Sandy Hook. In Article 6 of the UN Rights of the Child convention it says: 1. States Parties recognize that every child has the inherent right to life. 2. States Parties shall ensure to the maximum extent possible the survival and development of the child.
How can a country overloaded with firearms ensure that?
“We the children” it says in the report of the UN Secretary-General, “We were all children once. And we all share the desire for the well-being of our children, which has always been and will continue to be the most universally cherished aspiration of humankind.”
It did not make me wonder when I read: All UN member states except for Somalia, South Sudan and the United States have ratified the CRC. Experts say the US will end up adopting the Convention. What they do not know is when. After all, there’s another example: the United States took 40 years to ratify the convention banning genocide. I am afraid Veronique is right: Priorities ARE Completely Off Kilter.
I’m impressed with her strength. One thing that always makes me mad is how conspiracy theorists seem to think that if they really lost a child, they’d be crying 24/7, which is so untrue. The part of that video that caught my attention most is the part about Sophia with calendars.
